Initiative: Lindian Resources Increase Safety and Improve Learning Environments for the Kangankunde Mine Community in Malawi

During the Feasibility phase of the Kangankunde Rare Earths project from 2023 to 2024, Lindian Resources focussed on developing a cordial and mutually beneficial relationship with the Kangankunde community.

This resulted in the signing of a Community Engagement Plan agreement (CEP), developed in collaboration with local government, traditional leaders and community organisations, to facilitate a structured engagement with the community.

Responding to community requests, Lindian Resources has supported the community by providing facilities to improve safety and schooling.

Highlights

  • Community engagement resulting in the signing of Community Engagement Plan (CEP) agreement due the strong stakeholder engagement with the local community.
  • At the request of Community Leaders, and the Area Development Committee, Lindian completed construction of a community police unit at Kankao, which had been stalled for several years, due to lack of funding. The new police station will improve safety and security in the area and is anticipated to reduce crime and domestic violence.
  • Following visits to schools and noticing a lack of adequate learning facilities and materials, Lindian donated 100 school desks, with the capacity to accommodate two learners each, and 200 chairs to Kangankunde Primary School in Balaka. With the new desks, the pupils will no longer have to sit in the floor. The new learning environment is anticipated to improve student retention and learning outcomes.
