EITI Global Conference 2013 – AAMEG Statement of Support
The Australia-Africa Minerals & Energy Group (“AAMEG”) represents Australian and Australian-based mining, exploration, service and supply companies active in Africa.
AAMEG is committed to the development of a partnership with governments, international organisations, NGOs and the education sector, which helps build capability and credibility for the Australian mining industry active in Africa, and ensures that host countries are supported in their regional development initiatives. It is a relatively new organization having been formed in May 2011, but it already has more than one hundred members. AAMEG is headquartered in Perth, Western Australia.
AAMEG is committed to supporting member companies to enhance their capacity to deliver ethical, socially responsible and sustainable mining outcomes in Africa. AAMEG recognizes that the implementation of the Africa Mining Vision (2009) and Action Plan (2011) will only be successful if embraced in each country at regional and local level – hence individual mining companies working in Africa will be at centre of the successful implementation of these important and ambitious programs.
AAMEG members are encouraged to commit to the principles contained in a set of internationally recognised guiding documentation, which includes the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (“EITI”) and the EITI principles. AAMEG’s four main areas of focus are community engagement, security, governance, and political and social risk. The aim is to reduce operating and financial risk for foreign investors by actively contributing to capacity building in the broadest sense, as well as improving the overall investment climate in host countries.
AAMEG recognises that improved governance, including a determined effort in combating bribery and corruption can have a significant effect on a country’s attractiveness as an investment destination. It can also promote the timely development of industries that can improve the wealth generating capacity of a country, help governments serve their citizens better, and have a significant impact on poverty alleviation and future broader-based industrial development.
The importance of the EITI was identified by AAMEG at the time of its establishment in 2011 and EITI material has been a fundamental component of the AAMEG guiding documentation since that time.
