Member Spotlight: West African Resources Shines at MERC 2024

West African Resources made an incredible debut at this year’s Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC), held at Langley Park in Perth. Competing against 18 teams, WAF secured an impressive 4th place overall in their very first MERC appearance.
The West African Resources / SOMISA Emergency Response Team (ERT) travelled all the way from Burkina Faso and were thrilled to be in Perth for the event to meet industry peers and participate in the competition.
What made their achievement even more remarkable was the added challenge of competing with team members requiring translation support.
The WAF team achieved outstanding results across a number of categories:
- 1st – Team Safety and Hazchem
- 2nd – Confined Space Rescue, Overall Breathing Apparatus Skills, Best Captain, Team Spirit and Road Crash Rescue
- 3rd – Vertical Rescue
Other companies competing in the competition included site teams representing Anglo Gold Ashanti, BHP, Fortescue, Mineral Resources, Newmont, Northern Star Resources, Pilbara Minerals and Rio Tinto.
