About the Nominee & their Nomination

Ashley Morrison, a freelance journalist and sports historian, embarked on this project in 2016, driven by a passion to correct historical inaccuracies and return Siki’s legacy to its rightful home. The documentary doesn’t just recount facts; it brings to life the triumphs and struggles of a man who fought not just in the ring, but against the pervasive racism of his time. Tragically, Siki’s life was cut short at the age of 28 when he was murdered in New York, a stark reminder of the challenges he faced.

The impact of “Return to Your Corner” has been profound and widely recognised. Premiered at the INDABA Mining Conference in South Africa in 2023, with financial support from AAMEG member Geodrill Ltd, the film has since been screened at over 27 film festivals across 12 countries. Its accolades are impressive:

  • Best Documentary at the Ediplay International Film Festival in France
  • Best Documentary at the BCN Sports Film Festival in Spain
  • Best Documentary at ARFF Amsterdam in the Netherlands
  • Award for Outstanding Excellence in Biography at the Documentaries without Borders Film Festival in the USA
  • Award of Excellence at The Impact DOCS Awards in the USA

The official premiere, held on 15 February 2023 in New York, was hosted by the World Boxing Council and attended by notable African political figures, including the Consul General for Senegal in New York, El Hadji Amadou Ndao.

But the true measure of this project’s success lies in its reception among African audiences. For many, the film has been a revelation, allowing them to reclaim a part of their sporting heritage that was nearly lost to time. It’s not just about celebrating past glories; it’s about restoring truth, fostering cultural identity, and inspiring future generations.

The journey of “Return to Your Corner” is far from over. Plans are underway for a large screening in Senegal, bringing Siki’s story back to where it all began. Moreover, Ashley Morrison Media is poised to uncover and share more untold stories from African sporting history, with the potential to partner with resource companies operating across the continent.

This initiative goes beyond mere documentation. It’s a powerful tool for cultural enrichment, fostering understanding, and bridging gaps between past and present. By shining a light on figures like Battling Siki, Ashley Morrison Media is not just changing how we view African sports history – it’s changing how Africa sees itself.

In a world where narratives often overlook African achievements, “Return to Your Corner” stands as a testament to the power of storytelling in reclaiming cultural heritage. It’s a reminder that sometimes, to move forward, we need to look back – and bring our heroes home.
